What does Cal/OSHA require for farm field sanitation?
Cal/OSHA Title 8 section 3457 requires one toilet and one hand-washing facility for every 20 field workers. The facilities must be within a one-quarter mile walk or five minutes of the work, whichever is shorter. Toilets must be separate for each sex, and fewer than five workers may share one single-user toilet.
Official text: Cal/OSHA Title 8 §3457, Field Sanitation. An employer may transport workers to facilities instead when field work lasts under two hours, among other exceptions. Federal farms rules appear in OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110. This is not legal advice.
| Workers in the field | Toilets (separate by sex) | Hand-washing facilities |
|---|---|---|
| Fewer than 5 | 1 single-user, all-gender | 1 |
| 5 to 20 | 1 per sex | 1 |
| 21 to 40 | 2 per sex | 2 |
| 41 to 60 | 3 per sex | 3 |
How do toilets keep up with moving crews in orchards?
Towable porta potties ride on a small trailer so crews can pull the unit block to block and stay inside the quarter-mile limit. Towable units suit almond, walnut and peach harvests around Turlock, Hilmar and Denair. Standard units work when the crew stays in one block for several days.
Tell us the ranch roads, gate codes and the blocks for the week. We service units where they sit, so leave them near a drivable lane.
When do farms around Turlock need extra service?
Farms around Turlock need extra service from August through October, when almond and walnut harvests bring the most workers and daytime heat often tops 95°F. A unit shared by 20 workers fills in about three days in that season, so twice-weekly service is the safe plan.
Dairies and poultry operations with year-round crews usually stay on one weekly service. Packing sheds add hand-washing stations at breakroom doors.
Farm and ranch questions
Can I get a porta potty on a trailer that we can move around the farm?
Towable units are built for that. The unit sits on a small trailer with a hitch, so your crew can move it to the next block. Keep it level and near a lane we can reach for service.
Can you service a porta potty I already own?
Pump-out service for customer-owned units can be scheduled on our route days. Call with the number of units, the location and how often they need pumping.
Can units stay out for the whole harvest season?
Units can stay out from first shake to last pickup. Harvest rentals run on 28-day cycles with weekly or twice-weekly service, and you call to pull units when crews leave.
Will the truck get stuck on our dirt roads?
Our drivers handle dry dirt and gravel ranch roads every week. After heavy rain, we may set the unit at the nearest firm spot and call you first.
