What makes a portable toilet wheelchair-accessible?
A wheelchair-accessible portable toilet has a ground-level floor with no step, a wide self-closing door, grab bars beside the seat and enough floor space for a 60-inch turning circle. A wheelchair-accessible unit is also easier for parents with strollers and guests who use walkers.
We describe these units the way manufacturers do: wheelchair-accessible. Whether a site meets the ADA also depends on the path to the door, the ground surface and how many accessible units are in each group. Your venue or permit office makes that call.

How many ADA porta potties does an event need?
Section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards says that where portable toilets are grouped together, at least 5% of the units in each cluster, and never fewer than one, must be accessible. A cluster of 1 to 20 units needs at least 1 accessible unit. A cluster of 21 to 40 needs at least 2.
Legal minimum vs. our advice. The legal minimum comes from the 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2. We suggest one accessible unit at every cluster, even small backyard events, when a guest uses a wheelchair or walker. Confirm your event's exact needs with the venue or the City of Turlock.
| Units in one cluster | Accessible units required (5%, minimum 1) |
|---|---|
| 1 to 20 | 1 |
| 21 to 40 | 2 |
| 41 to 60 | 3 |
| 61 to 80 | 4 |
Where should a wheelchair-accessible unit be placed?
A wheelchair-accessible unit should sit on firm, level ground such as pavement, packed gravel or a plywood base on grass. The path from the event to the door should be smooth and at least 36 inches wide. Do not set the unit on a slope, soft lawn or loose gravel.
Tell us about the surface when you book. If the only spot is grass, we can bring the unit as close to a paved edge as the truck allows.
Wheelchair-accessible unit questions
Is a handicap porta potty the same as an ADA porta potty?
People use both names for the same unit. Manufacturers call it a wheelchair-accessible unit. It has a no-step floor, grab bars and a 60-inch turning space. Whether a setup meets the ADA depends on placement and numbers too.
Why does the accessible unit cost more?
The accessible unit is about twice as wide as a standard unit, weighs more and takes more room on the truck. Fewer fit per delivery, so the price is higher. One accessible unit can still replace one standard unit in a small group.
Can one accessible unit be the only unit at my party?
One accessible unit can serve as the only unit for a small party. Everyone can use it, and guests with walkers or strollers will find it easier. For more than about 40 guests, add a standard unit.
Do job sites need an accessible unit?
Cal/OSHA does not set a separate accessible-unit count for construction crews. If a worker needs one, request it. Public-facing job sites, such as park projects, often add one for visitors.
