What are the Cal/OSHA toilet rules for construction sites?

Cal/OSHA Title 8 section 1526 requires at least one toilet for every 20 employees of each sex on a construction site. Toilets must be kept clean, private and stocked with toilet paper. Where fewer than five employees work, one single-user all-gender toilet is enough. Washing facilities are covered in section 1527.

Official text: Title 8 §1526 Toilets at Construction Jobsites. Federal sites follow OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51, Table D-1.

What are the field sanitation rules for California farms?

Cal/OSHA Title 8 section 3457 requires one toilet and one hand-washing facility for every 20 agricultural field workers, located within a quarter-mile walk or five minutes of the work, whichever is shorter. Toilets must be separate for each sex and kept clean, with soap, water and single-use towels at the sinks.

Official text: Title 8 §3457 Field Sanitation. Employers may transport workers instead in limited cases, such as field work under two hours.

How many accessible porta potties does a public event need?

Section 213.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards requires that where portable toilets are clustered, at least 5% of the units in each cluster, and no fewer than one, are accessible. A wheelchair-accessible unit needs a 60-inch diameter turning space or a T-shaped space inside, plus a firm, level route to the door.

Do I need a permit to put a porta potty in Turlock?

A porta potty on private property for a private party or home project usually needs no permit in Turlock. A porta potty on a public street, sidewalk or city right-of-way needs an encroachment permit from the City of Turlock's engineering division. Public events in city parks may need a special event permit.

  • Outside city limits in Stanislaus County, the county Public Works department handles right-of-way permits.
  • Food booths at public events fall under Stanislaus County Environmental Resources, which reviews restroom access for temporary food facilities.
  • HOA rules can limit how long a unit stays visible on a driveway.

Rules change. Confirm with the city or county office before your event. This guide is not legal advice.

Rules and permit questions

Does a porta potty on my driveway need a permit?

A porta potty on your own driveway usually needs no city permit in Turlock. If it sits on the sidewalk or street, it does. Check HOA rules in newer subdivisions, which may limit how long it stays in view.

Who checks porta potty rules on job sites?

Cal/OSHA enforces sanitation rules on California job sites and farms. Inspectors may check toilet counts, cleanliness, paper and hand-washing access during any site visit.

Is hand sanitizer enough on a construction site?

Section 1527 calls for washing facilities on construction sites. Many crews add a hand-washing station because sanitizer does not remove dirt, oils or chemicals. Ask your safety officer what your site plan needs.

Do toilets need to be separate for men and women?

Cal/OSHA counts toilets per sex on job sites and farms. Single-user units with locking doors can be designated all-gender and counted toward the total under the conditions in the rule.
