How many porta potties does a construction site need in California?
California construction sites need at least one toilet for every 20 employees of each sex under Cal/OSHA Title 8 section 1526. A crew of 1 to 20 workers needs 1 toilet. A crew of 21 to 40 needs 2. Crews of fewer than five can share one single-user all-gender toilet.
| Crew size | Cal/OSHA minimum (§1526) | Our recommendation with weekly service |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 10 | 1 toilet | 1 standard unit |
| 11 to 20 | 1 toilet | 2 standard units, or 1 unit serviced twice a week |
| 21 to 40 | 2 toilets | 3 to 4 standard units + 1 hand-washing station |
| 41 to 60 | 3 toilets | 5 to 6 units + 2 hand-washing stations |
Legal minimum vs. our advice. The minimum is from Cal/OSHA Title 8 §1526. The 1-per-20 count assumes each unit is cleaned often. Our recommendation adds units so lines stay short and tanks do not fill before the weekly visit. Confirm your site plan with your safety officer. This is not legal advice.
Worked example: a framing crew of 14 on a 40-hour week. The legal minimum is 1 toilet. A standard unit holds about 200 uses. Fourteen workers use about 280 times a week, so one unit would fill before the weekly visit. Rent 2 units, or 1 unit with twice-weekly service.
How does a job-site rental work week to week?
A job-site rental starts on the delivery day and runs on a 28-day billing cycle. The price is the same whether the job takes 10 days or 28. Each week the driver pumps the tank, cleans the unit and restocks paper. The rental renews every 28 days until you call or text for pickup.
- Call with the site address or a dropped map pin. New tracts without addresses are normal.
- Tell us the gate code, the on-site contact and where the crew wants the unit.
- The unit arrives clean and stocked. Service day matches the delivery weekday.
- Need extra service before a pour or inspection? Call and we add a visit.
- Call or text for pickup. Billing ends with the current cycle.
Where should a porta potty go on a job site?
A job-site porta potty should sit on flat ground within about 25 feet of where the service truck can park, away from crane swing paths, trenches and material drops. Tracts in Turlock's growth areas often have soft dirt after rain, so a gravel pad or the curb edge works best.
- Keep units out of the street unless you hold an encroachment permit from the city.
- Stake or strap units on open lots. Afternoon wind in the valley tips loose units.
- In July and August, set units in shade if any exists. Heat speeds odor.
- Leave the door facing the work, not the street.

Construction porta potty questions
Do I have to rent the job-site unit for a full month?
A job-site unit is billed on a 28-day cycle. The price is the same for a week and a half or for four weeks, and you call for pickup when you finish. That cycle also gives you room if the job runs long.
Can you deliver to a lot with no address?
We deliver to new tracts and open lots all the time. Text a dropped map pin or a cross street, and mark the spot with a stake or cone. The driver calls the on-site contact before arriving.
Is it cheaper to service every other week?
Every-other-week service is possible for one or two workers, but it saves little and the tank can fill. Most crews keep weekly service. Crews over 10 usually need twice a week.
Do you take purchase orders or invoice the office?
First orders are paid by card at booking. Contractors with repeat orders can ask to set up a business account with invoicing. The itemized quote can be emailed to your project manager for approval.
Can I lock the unit at night?
Units have a hasp for a padlock. Bring your own combination lock and give the code to us so the driver can service it. Locked units stop after-hours use on open sites.
