What is a portable hand-washing station?
A portable hand-washing station is a free-standing unit with two basins, foot pumps, a fresh-water tank, a gray-water tank, a soap dispenser and a paper towel holder. A hand-washing station lets two people wash at the same time with running water and no hookup.
People call these "the foot-pump ones" or "outside sinks." Hand sanitizer kills many germs but does not remove dirt, pesticide residue or food grease. That is why farm and food settings call for soap and water.

When does California require hand-washing stations?
Cal/OSHA requires one hand-washing facility for every 20 field workers in agriculture, within a quarter-mile walk or five minutes of the work, under Title 8 section 3457. Construction sites must provide washing facilities under Title 8 section 1527. Food events need hand washing near toilets and food booths.
Read the official text: Cal/OSHA Title 8 §3457, Field Sanitation. For food booths, Stanislaus County Environmental Resources sets the rules for temporary food facilities. Confirm with your event organizer.
How many hand-washing stations do I need?
Plan one hand-washing station for every 4 toilets at an event with food, and one for every 20 workers on a farm crew. A hand-washing station serves two people at once. A single station covers a backyard party of up to about 100 guests when the toilets are standard units.
If toilets already have sinks inside, such as the deluxe flushing unit, you may not need a separate station. Many hosts add one anyway near the food so guests wash before eating.
Hand-washing station questions
Does the hand-washing station come with water and towels?
The station arrives full of fresh water, with soap and paper towels stocked. You do not hook up a hose. On long rentals we refill water, soap and towels at each weekly service.
Is a sink-inside toilet cheaper than a toilet plus a station?
A deluxe unit with a sink inside often costs less than one standard unit plus a separate station. A separate station lets two people wash at once outside, which moves lines faster at food events.
Will the water run out during a big event?
One station holds roughly 400 to 500 hand washes. A party of 150 guests can use that up on a hot day. Add a second station or ask for a mid-event refill.
Can I rent a hand-washing station without a toilet?
A station can be rented alone. Food vendors, farm stands and job sites that already have toilets often do this. It is delivered and serviced on the same schedule as a toilet.
